During my career as a Vietnamese language teacher, I have taught or met a lot of overseas Vietnamese ("Việt kiều" as we call them). Their level of Vietnamese varies, and I have come to realise that parents play the biggest part in maintaining the growing child’s grasp of the language. Unfortunately, a lot of parents don’t realize that teaching their child Vietnamese – simply by talking to him or her in Vietnamese – is one of the greatest gifts they can give. I have made a video on overseas Vietnamese learning Vietnamese as their heritage language, so if you want to learn more about this topic, watch it here.

The topic of raising a bilingual and bicultural child has become of great personal interest to me since I became a mother myself – my husband and I don't share the same native language.

I have looked for guidelines and tips online for this but what’s available seems limited. Thus, I decided to share my own insights and experiences through my new podcast. The podcast is in Vietnamese, and I hope it will be useful for Vietnamese parents with an interest in giving their children the invaluable gift of fluency in their mother tongue.

Dạy con tiếng Việt | Teach your children Vietnamese is a weekly podcast and as of March 2024, has released 13 episodes.
